2019 vesicular stomatitis virus situation report

On June 21, 2019, the National Veterinary Services Laboratories (NVSL) in Ames, Iowa, confirmed a finding of vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) infection (Indiana serotype) on a premises in Kinney County, Texas. VSV-Indiana serotype has not been diagnosed in the U.S. since 1998; all VSV cases from 2004-2016 have been VSV-New Jersey serotype. The procedure suggested to analyse PT samples are isolation & identification by culture method and genome detection by PCR according to OIE chapter 3.5.2 (Part diagnosis method/ sop on this website).

VSV, genome detection and characterisation, PT 2019

Vesicular Stomatitis Virus, genome detection and characterisation, proficiency test 2019, available on LEILA website (https://leila.anses.fr/). The procedure suggested to analyse the PT samples is the "Real-time RT-PCR method for VSV genome detection and typing", available on the European Reference Equine website/ diagnosis method/ SOP  or other procedure for VSV genome detection and/or typing.

Workshops 2019 on Contagious equine metritis and Vesicular stomatitis

Please save the date ! Two workshops are organised this year at Anses Maisons-Alfort - The Contagious equine metritis worshop will be held on October 3, 2019 - The Vesicular stomatitis workshop will be combined with the workshop on foot and mouth diseases organised by the new EURL for FMDV . These joint VSV and FMDV workshops will be held on October 7 and 8, 2019 . 

European Union Reference Laboratory for equine diseases

The French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health Safety (ANSES) has incorporated the missions, resources and personnel of the French Food Safety Agency (AFSSA) and the French Agency for Environmental and Occupational Health Safety (AFSSET). Its principal mission is to contribute to the protection of human health with respect to the environment, the workplace and food.

On 1 July 2008, European Commission officially designated the French Food Safety Agency (AFSSA) as the European Union Reference Laboratory (EU-RL) for equine diseases (excluding African horse sickness).

The activities of the European Union Reference Laboratory are handled on 2 sites

The Laboratory for animal health, Maisons-Alfort site (near Paris) studies West Nile, Viral Equine Encephalitis, Vesicular Stomatitis, Glanders and Melioidosis

The Laboratory for animal health, Dozulé site (in Normandy) studies Contagious Equine Metritis, Dourine, Equine Viral Arteritis, Equine Herpes viruses and Equine Infectious Anaemia
